By Cathy Bond"I have been planning to come to Canada for about five years," said Alexander Suslov, who is visiting Dean Smiley and Eliska Harmer Smiley of Alelier Glass Works on King Street in Millbrook.
"I first met Dean and Eliska in Germany about five years ago and then we met again in Siberia. They were always encouraging me to visit them, but I was too busy with exhibitions to travel," said Suslov.
"I was happy that they extended the invitation again this year when I was free to travel. The have given me this beautiful studio apartment that’s full of positive energy and I find it easy to create here."
Suslov studied art at the Faculty of Art and Graphics in Orel and at the Kharkov Industrial Academy of Art. He specializes in monumental works (interior and exterior murals) and relatively small graphic series. "The coloristic, plastic "Figurative" and rhythmical base of his works, irrespective of their size and genre, rests essentially on scrupulous knowledge of the archaic and its cult nature."
For the last few years Suslov has been exhibiting his paintings in Siberia at well known galleries and Government Museums. This was an important time for Suslov and the highest honour to have his work displayed in museums. Over 100 of his paintings are in museums in Russia including the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg.
Suslov is currently working toward an exhibition and depending on how his collection evolves it will be decided if the exhibition should take place in Millbrook or a larger centre. He has already completed thirteen paintings mainly abstract and retrospective and wants to complete thirty-six paintings before this fall.
The artist is very inspired with the beautiful countryside around Millbrook and the Millbrook Valley Trails and has no trouble capturing this beauty in his landscape paintings. Part of his landscape portfolio will be a Millbrook pond series.
Currently Suslov is working with water colours but plans to start to work with oil on canvas in the near future.
Suslov is already displaying some of his paintings at Atelier Glass Works at 30 King Street East in Millbrook, 705-932-4527.
